Overview

Sonder is an internationally recognized hospitality brand and well-known competitor of AirBnB. As state and local elected officials sought to regulate and tax short-term rental companies, Sonder aimed to distinguish in statute its distinct type of short-term rental offering within the State House and at the local level in Boston and Cambridge.

Our work

Our team initiated municipal business development campaigns in Boston and Cambridge, and worked extensively to advocate Sonder’s interests to city councilors. Through our advocacy efforts, Sonder had the opportunity to meet with key decision-makers at the State House and City Hall to articulate its business interests. We also introduced Sonder’s product to Cambridge city councilors and stakeholders at a time when the city was debating an ordinance that would potentially put the company out of business.

Results

As a result of our efforts, the City of Boston has tabled the legislation. In its place, the city plans to conduct a study led by its Chief Information Officer, in which Sonder may have an active role in shaping potential legislation.
